Tamil Nadu State Government had taken massive steps to control the mobilization of mobs in Tuticorin against the Sterilite Copper Smelting Plant. The internet service providers had received a directive from State Government to suspend internet in the districts of Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli and Kaniyakumari. Fake provocative news mixed with half-truths were being circulated through social media and this was the reason for mobilization of violent protesters and mobs from Thoothukudi and surrounding districts. To control such happenings, Tamil Nadu Government decided to suspend internet connections. The internet services were suspended from yesterday and will be suspended till 27
of May.
The letter from the Home Secretary of the state says about the anti-social elements that are trying to exploit the situation by spreading fake news and hence the government says it is necessary to cut the internet services. The full letter from the home ministry can be read here:

Government also took down on the bus services by temporarily stopping the bus services from Madurai Corporation consisting of districts such as Madurai, Theni, Dindugul and Virudhunagar. Totally 33 buses travelling to Thoothukudi from the districts of Madurai corporation were temporarily stopped.
Union Home Minister, Rajnath Singh had tweeted,
“I am deeply pained at the loss of precious lives during the agitation at Tuticorin in Tamil Nadu. The MHA has taken cognisance of the situation and sought a report on the incident and the prevailing situation from the state government.”
A Tamil radical meme page called “Desiya Agni Siragugal” had come up with a provocative post on May 21
2018, a day before the violence and shooting saying that on 22ndof May, Sterlite Copper Smelting Plant in Thoothukudi would be demolished. A radical page coming with such a post one day before the incident arises many questions regarding the cause of violence. The post can be viewed here:

This is an example of one such provocative post, which stimulates youngsters to indulge in violence. Tamil Nadu Government suspending the internet facilities to stop the circulation of such anti-social posts and temporarily stopping the bus services to Thoothukudi is expected to control and reduce the influence of anti-social elements in the issue; however one cannot take away the fact the State Government has been an utter failure in all aspects in dealing to this sensitive situation causing death and mayhem.
