Actor C Joseph Vijay has come under the radar of tax officials over alleged tax evasion of Rs. 25 crores. Income Tax officials on Thursday conducted raids in various premises linked to Tamil film personalities across Tamil Nadu. Searches were conducted in the properties of AGS Cinemas, the financier of the latest Tamil film Bigil – Anbu Chezhiyan, and Actor Vijay’s residence.
Actor Vijay, who was shooting for his upcoming film Master in Neyveli, was hurriedly taken in a Toyota Innova car of the officials to his newly constructed bungalow in Panaiyur. Actor Vijay was seen covering his face with his right hand to avoid showing his face to the media waiting outside.
The raid at Actor Vijay’s house follows the raid at prominent financier of Tamil movies Mr. Anbu Chezhiyan who was also the financier for Vijay’s last venture Bigil. The officials also investigated the distributers of the film. Film Production house AGS Productions and the premises of Kalpathi S Aghoram were also raided.
It is believed that Actor Vijay took Rs 50 crores as salary for the film and has evaded tax to the tune of Rs. 25 crores.
Later in the day, I-T department seized unaccounted cash of Rs. 77 crores from hideouts and secret places in Chennai and Madurai which purportedly belongs to financier Anbu Chezhiyan. Promissory notes, Property documents, and post-dated cheques were taken as collateral security during the search. It is estimated that the concealed amount is likely to exceed Rs. 300 crores.
Though no cash or documents were seized from Vijay, the actor’s investment in immovable properties and renumeration received from the producer AGS for acting in Bigil, has become the subject matter of investigation, Commissioner of Income Tax Surabhi Ahluwalia declared in a press release.
