Senior BJP leader and former finance minister Arun Jaitley, who was admitted in the ICU at Delhi-based All India Institute of Medical Sciences on August 9 has passed away on Friday, On 17 August, it was reported that Arun Jaitley was on life-support and a few days later on 23 August, it was reported that his health had deteriorated. It is also to be noted that the BJP leader has been facing prolonged illness, which is why he had stopped attending office since early April last year and had opted to not contest on the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.
Arun Jaitley was a Lawyer by profession and was one of the most senior leaders of the Modi cabinet, during Prime Minister Modi's first tenure Arun Jaitley served as the Finance Minister and is credited for bringing forth various economic measures which jump started the economy including the rolling out of the Goods and Services Tax and further played a crucial role in the skilful implementation of demonetisation.
Arun Jaitley has been a member of BJP national executive since 1991 . He was appointed minister of state (independent charge) for Information and Broadcasting when Atal Bihari Vajpayee formed the government. He also served as cabinet minister of Law, Justice and Company Affairs a year later.
