Tamil Nadu state assembly elections happened in May 2016. AIADMK under former Chief Minister J Jayalalitha won the elections and came to power. Tenure for local government bodies was over in October of the same year. Subsequently, the State Election Commission was actively involved in preparing the state for local elections but due to issues such as court cases and revamping the wards in local bodies, the announcement of the local election was canceled.
After that, Local body elections did not happen in the state for the last three years., which paralyzed the work in local bodies. Since the elections were not held, the central government has suspended allotments for the local body. Special officers are appointed to monitor local body operations and had resulted in the deterioration of local body administration. In court cases, the state election commission guarantees that local elections will be held as soon as possible.
Speaking to reporters in Karaikudi, Rural Minister SP Velumani said that the Tamil Nadu Election Commission had submitted the schedule for the local body elections in the Supreme Court and these local body elections will be held soon in Tamil Nadu.
