Union Minister for Women and Child Development Smriti Irani on Wednesday held a video conference with activists, institutions associated with her ministry and organizations working in the field of women rights. Over a 1000 people participated in the live conference. She urged them to establish connect and send out a message of solidarity to those in distress.

Earlier, gender rights activists and the UN had called for the boosting helplines, offer psycho-social support and online counselling. They also demanded that these be declared as essential services.

Ms. Irani gave out instructions to her Ministry's officials that One Stop Centres which provide legal and psycho-social help to survivors of gender-based violence be linked with local medical teams, police and the National Legal Services Authority.

The conference saw the participation of staff members from One Stop Centres, Swadhar Greh, Ujjwala homes (shelter homes for women in distress) and Working Women Hostels.

Ms. Irani asked for the linking of One Stop Centres with the NIMHANS. She ordered a senior official to hold discussions with a state every second day. She urged the NGOs to ensure that every individual calls atleast 10 women everyday so that women know that they are not alone.
