The man who breathed lives into Tom and Jerry and Popeye is no more
He had directed 13 episodes of Tom and Jerry and multiple episodes of Popeye. His other works include Munro and Nudnik

If you've been a child who cherished the cartoons of the 'old Cartoon Network' that gave us the eternal Tom and Jerry and Popeye The Sailor Man, this might be a little hard to digest. Oscar winning illustrator and animator Gene Deitch passed away at his apartment in Prague mentioned media reports on Monday.
Deitch is known for creating the timeless classics Tom and Jerry and Popeye. He had directed 13 episodes of Tom and Jerry and multiple episodes of Popeye. His other works include Munro and Nudnik. Born in Chicago but settled in Prague where he met his wife, he created some of his best works while living in the Czech capital.
Deitch won the Academy award for Best Animated Short film in 1960 for Munro. He was also nominated twice in the same category for Here's Nudnik and How to Avoid Friendship. In 2004, he received the Winsor McCay Award for his lifelong contribution to animation.
Deitch is survived by his wife and 3 sons from the first marriage. All his 3 sons are cartoonists and illustrators.
His works shall remain immortal for generations to come.
