The urban local bodies in Tamil Nadu are thinking out of the box to make lives easy for the people amidst the lockdown due to the COVID-19 outbreak. They have come to the rescue of people by providing essentials like vegetables, fruits, groceries and hot cooked food at their door step.
Mobile vegetable shops are being operated since the past 4-5 days in arrangement with the local stores. One vehicle has been arranged for every ward. Vegetable packs ranging from ₹100 to ₹150 are being offered. Customers can place an order with their local shop over phone who then reaches out to the mobile shops which delivers the items are the doorstep. The mobile vegetable shops are being run by the Department of Horticulture and Plantation Crop. There is also an online portal (www.ethottam.com) run by the department through which orders for vegetables and fruits can be placed.
The Chennai Corporation is also set to "roll out" Amma Canteens literally. Mobile Amma Unavagam will be plying in different areas soon. The Palaniswami government allotted ₹31.4 crores recently for the smooth functioning of the Amma Unavagams. The Amma Unavagams will provide 3 meals instead of 2 meals that was served during the pre-COVID days.
