SS Vasan, the Indian-origin scientist in Australia with
roots in Tamil Nadu is leading the efforts in creating a vaccine against the
deadly novel corona virus that has claimed more than 600 lives in China and
infecting thousands of others across the world.
The first batch of virus was developed in a lab with high
security at the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization
(CSIRO), Australias’ premier scientific agency. This is significant in
conducting preclinical trials.
Before this, a major breakthrough was achieved after
researchers at the Australia’s Doherty Institute isolated the virus from a
human sample last week.
SS Vasan who currently leads the CSIRO Dangerous Pathogens Team,
is a Rhodes Scholar from the University of Oxford and is an alumnus of Birla
Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani and Indian Institute of Science,
Prior to this, SS Vasan also worked on the dengue, zika
It is said that the CSIRO scientists are aiming for a 16
week deadline to test the vaccine for Corona virus on humans.
