Madurai Meenakshi Temple awarded with the second-best ‘Swachh Iconic Place’ in India

The famous Madurai Meenakshiman Temple is awarded as the second-best ‘Swachh Iconic Place’ in the country.


Under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Swachh Bharath movement, major pilgrimages were selected from across the country last year to monitor the cleanliness of its environment. 25 modern bathrooms are constructed around the Madurai Meenakshi Amman Temple.


Twin trash bins are placed around the temple as plastic bags have got banned in the state. The 24-hour cleaning crew is equipped with a modern mud mixer, 63 compactor pins, 4 mini compactor trucks, 15 purified automatic drinking machines and 5 modern battery vehicles to carry pilgrims.


At a function held in Delhi yesterday, Union Minister Shri Gajendra Singh Shekhawat and Co-Minister Rattan Lal Kataria presented the second prize and a certificate of appreciation to Madurai Corporation Commissioner S Visakhan. First price was received by the Vaishnavi Devi Temple in Jammu.
