Pakistan's efforts in vain as UN Rejects Pakistan's appeal!

The Modi Govt's decision
to abrogate article 370 from Kashmir has not gone down well with Pakistan,
which seems to be visibly shaken by this bold action of the resolute Govt. It
was not quite a while ago when Pakistan's Prime Minister Imran Khan when on his
trip to the U.S had requested the United States President to mediate between
India and Pakistan on the issue of Kashmir.

The abrogation of Article 370 has seemed to catch Pakistan off-guard, which decided to go through it routine route of raising a hue and cry to the United States. However, much to the dismay of Imran Khan, the United states have refused to intervene and has called for peace between the countries.

This only furthered Pakistan's desperation, which lead to
Pakistans  Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood
Qureshi writing a letter to the UN Secretary General on the current situation
of Kashmir.

On Thursday evening, the UN Chief Antonio Guterres responded
on the issue by simply stating the Simla Agreement of 1972. For those unaware,
the Simla Agreement was signed by Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and President
Zulfikar Ali Bhutto of Pakistan on 2nd July 1972. It was a peace treaty which hoped to reverse the consequences of the 1971 war,
which saw India liberating Bangladesh from the clutches of Pakistan. The treaty states that, both
countries are to resolve and settle their differences by peaceful means through
bilateral negotiations or by any other peaceful means mutually agreed upon
between them.

The crucial point to be noted was that, the secretary
general refused to make any offer to
mediate on the issue of Kashmir as requested by Pakistan and urged both
countries against escalating the issue and to maintain status quo. When questioned
on whether the Secretary General is of the opinion on the need to monitor the
situation in Kashmir through a Special Envoy, Guterres' spokesman Stephane Dujarric replied that the Secretary-General was
following the situation very closely and that at the moment there was going to
be no discussion on assigning a Special Envoy. Needless to say the response
from the UN has left Pakistan feeling snubbed and dejected.
