Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami on Thursday informed the assembly that damaged roads and other infrastructure would be repaired in jurisdictions falling under the Greater Chennai Corporation, Municipalities and Town Panchayats across the state at a cost of ₹1000 crores. Of this, a total of ₹610 crores would be used to build the sewerage system for Coimbatore Corporation, ₹310 crores would be allocated for piped drinking water supply infrastructure in 57 wards of Madurai corporation and ₹50 crore for boosting infrastructure of Bodinayakanur in Theni district.

A sum of ₹213.26 crores would be allotted for roads and other infrastructure in narrow streets in rural areas for 2020-2021. Another ₹170.18 crores would be earmarked for building 1200 small and minor bridges in rural areas of various districts. 299 rural roads covering 1044 kms would be developed at a cost of ₹553.07 crores and link roads for about 1,150 kms in remote villages would be laid at a cost of ₹246.90 crore.

Also, 10,000 cement concrete check dams in rural areas at ₹460 crores, perimeter walls for schools in rural areas at ₹440.05 crore and 15,000 shelter for farms animals at ₹258.60 crore, 1000 wells to boost irrigation at ₹98.65 crores were announced.

Here are some of the other projects that the CM announced:

• A detailed project report would be prepared soon for establishing efficient transport systems in Coimbatore and Madurai.

• An Innovation Exhibition Centre under the Smart City Project to come up in Chennai with new ideas form entrepreneurs and students

• Tree saplings would be planted using the Miyawaki method in empty spaces in areas falling under Corporations and Municipalities across the state.

The CM also said that sanitary workers who work across 15 Corporations, 121 Municpalities, 528 Town Panchayats and 12,525 Village Panchayats would hence forth be called "Thooimai Paniyaalargal"
