After the historical defeat of the Congress party in 2019 Loksabha elections, the Congress Working Committee made a last effort on Saturday evening to persuade Rahul Gandhi to continue as the party president, and proposed that if Rahul still doesn’t relent, Sonia Gandhi should be the interim president and oversee elections for the top post.
The CWC – which meeting for the second time on Saturday evening -concluded its discussions close to 11 pm, as reported by Hindustan Times. Gulam Nabi Azad, in his one liner answer to the Media, informed that Sonia Gandhi will be the party's interim president.
Earlier Saturday morning, Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi had excused themselves from the zonal body meetings, saying they cannot be part of the selection process, NDTV reports.
As the Congress party failed to find a new President, the appointment of Sonia Gandhi as the party's interim President has strengthened the BJP and its supporters. SG Suryah, BJYM leader from Tamilnadu tweeted and said, "Sonia Gandhi who appointed herself as Congress President locking up Sitaram Kesari in 1998 & who appointed her son Rahul Gandhi Congress President in December 2017 after longest 19 years stint as Congress President now reappoints herself as Congress President as her son ran away!"
Social Activist, Shehzad tweeted that, "Sonia Gandhi to be interim president of Congress Lol Hahahhahaha
