Following the Centre's passing of an ordinance to suspend MPLADS funds for two years, Tamil Nadu CM Edappadi K. Palaniswami on Tuesday ordered for the allocation of ₹1 crore from each MLA's fund towards efforts to fight COVID-19. Mr. Palaniswami said that the ₹1 crore from MLA Constituency Development Scheme (MLACDS) of each MLA would be integrated at the district and state levels for it to be used to meet the expenses incurred in COVID-19 combat measures.

Every MLA is allotted ₹3 crores under the MLACDS. These funds are to be spent by the MLA for the development of his/her constituency. There are two components on which the funds are to be spent – tied and untied components. Under tied components, a sum of 1.125 crores is allotted to provide for school infrastructure, solar street lights, laying/relaying of roads, etc. The untied component is to be used for doing any work not falling under the negative list/prohibited works. Works falling under the tied component also can be taken up under Untied Component.
