Fast Moving Consumer Goods sales are moving up really fast
Items like biscuits, noodles, milk and milk products see surge in demand and sale

The COVID-19 outbreak has become a challenge and an opportunity for others. There has been a spike in demand and sales in items like milk, milk products, biscuits, noodles, soaps, hand sanitizers and other items as people stock up on essentials.
Several companies like Godrej, Brittania, Amul and Parle recorded 10-15% surge in demand and have scaled up production to meet the same.
Items like milk, ghee, butter, paneer, cheese are seeing an average increase of 15-20% in daily sales, The Hindu reported quoting R.S Sodhi, the Managing Director of Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation, the owner of the popular brand Amul.
The common man's biscuit Parle G has also seen a spurt in sales. Other biscuits like Tiger, Goodday and Marie biscuits have also been selling like hot cakes.
Not only food items, but toiletries like soap, handwash and sanitizers have been going off the shelves like never before. With doctors and other authorities creating awareness about washing hands, these products have seen increase in sales.
There are also instances of consumers hoarding these essentials. This behaviour is observed not among the poor but among those who belong to the middle and upper middle class. Retailers have now put restrictions on quantities being purchased.
Companies involved in the production of these items have ramped up production to meet the demand.
As states started enforcing lockdown measures, people have been resorting to panic buying. Several supermarkets saw their shelves becoming empty and customers making a beeline despite the government's assurance that essentials would be available.
It is important to note that all essentials like food items, medicines, e-commerce, petrol bunks, etc will continue to be available. Hence, there is no need to panic and hoard on essential items.
