The Central Government has refused to grant permission to Karnataka to inspect for the construction of
Mekedatu Dam across the Cauvery River.
The Karnataka government had asked the Union Environment Ministry to conduct an inspection to build the
Mekedatu Dam and at the same time the Government of Tamil Nadu had displayed its protests against this. Due to the persistent assertion of Tamil Nadu, the Central Government had rejected Karnataka's demand. A team of experts from the Union Environment Ministry refused to grant permission to Karnataka because of the opposition of the Tamil Nadu government.
The expert panel also told that only in the situation of a smooth environment between Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, the permission can be given to build the dam. An alternative location for the dam also should be located. The Expert Panel has also clearly stated that it cannot grant permission to Karnataka government to conduct a comprehensive study as it does not specify the alternative location.
